Summary
The small and modern museum exhibition collects different materials coming from the area of the basilica and the close necropolis of the SS. Felice and Fortunato. Beside the few Roman finds, among which an almost undamaged sarcophagus stands out, the museum collects interesting architectural elements, inscriptions, statues and other artefacts pertaining the Christian basilica complex.
Collection history
The SS. Felice and Fortunato Museum was arranged between 2003 and 2005 in order to collect and enhance some of the materials coming from the basilica area and from the close necropolis of the SS. Felice and Fortunato in a modern exhibition framework.
Room 1
The first room can be accessed after passing through the entrance room, on whose bottom wall the cast of the front part of a sarcophagus hangs, representing the scene of the Adoration of the Magi (late 4th century A.D.) whose original copy is kept in the Diocesan Museum of Vicenza. In the room, in the middle of which a nice white Proconnesian marble sarcophagus “of the Seasons” stands out (2nd century A.D.), there are a fragment of a strigil sarcophagus (5th century A.D.), a complete Dressel 6A-type amphora (late 1st century B.C. – 1st century A.D), a soft-stone anepigraph altar, three frame elements with a toothed limestone ring, the reconstruction of a late antique burial of the capuchin type (a type of burial composed of a leaning tile roof covering the deceased who was laid on a tile floor) and several epigraphic items. Among these, three soft stone funerary slabs stand out dating back to the 5th and 7th century A.D.; two of them are in Latin and one in Greek (this last mentions Giovanni, an imperial cupbearer). The final part of the room contains Medieval architectural elements.
Room 2
The second room is more specifically dedicated to the architectural elements, to the inscriptions and to other historical-artistic items coming from the close basilica complex. Among those artefacts, there is a white Ionic marble capital dating back to the 5th century A.D.
