Summary
The archaeological area displays the rests of a Roman bridge with three arches, which was built between mid I century B.C. and mid II century A.D. on the Roman road “via Annia”.
History of research
The bridge was found and then excavated by the General Direction for Archaeological Heritage in the Veneto region in 1949.
Urban and geographical context
Ceggia is located along the Lagoon, between the rivers Piave and Livenza, in a marshy area. The bridge crossed the winding water channel “Canalat Piavon”, which was rectified in the first half of the XIX century.
Chronology
I-II sec. A.D. |
The archaeological area displays the remains of a Roman bridge which was built between mid I century B.C. and mid II century A.D. The bridge was located along the “via Annia”, the Roman road that was built around mid II century B.C. that linked Adria to Aquileia passing through Padova and Altino.
The bridge was 44 metres long and had 3 low arches. It leaned on wooden fences fixed in the ground so as to increase the compactness of the soil by reducing the amount of empty spaces. The arches were supported by two pillars which are partially visible today. They were built in blocks of sandstone put together with mortar and kept together by iron cramps. The two pillars are 8 metres long and between 1,60 and 1,70 metres large. They are wedge-shaped on both short sides, a technique aiming at breaking the water stream on one side and at preventing whirls and eddies on the other.
The bridge walkway must have been around 6 metres large, if we consider the dimensions of the protection parapet that was found during the excavations and which was 40 centimetres large. |
